No fewer than 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.

The president reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office ended the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was requested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been operating in full adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
