The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to check the goal on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton stay 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils role at both ends of the field

Following a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on goal, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the face of goal for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - added his second in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining well with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off somewhat and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a major worry for the manager, but their striker situation are.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised strikers - had netted only a single goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to add to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and opportunity to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.
