The McLaren driver just pipped team-mate and championship contender the Australian for the quickest lap in the dying seconds of the practice session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The British racer, who took the championship lead from Piastri by a single point after taking the win in the Mexican Grand Prix a fortnight back, outpaced the Australian by 0.023 seconds. Earlier in the session, Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver throughout the hour before sprint qualifying scheduled for 18:30 GMT. Max Verstappen, the sole remaining contender in the championship fight, lying 36 points Norris, was classified in 17th place as his Red Bull team ran a different programme. His teammate Yuki Tsunoda was the only driver to go off, albeit lightly, when he rotated at the fourth corner early in the session. The Japanese spun out over the exit kerbs before sliding over the run-off area, and was lucky to avoid just a minor contact of the fence. The Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton also had a spin, at the very end of the session, spinning around through the fast downhill Mergulho turn approaching the last turn on to the pit straight. The seven-time champion wrapped up in 19th place, just behind team-mate Charles Leclerc. The McLaren drivers were well clear of the remaining drivers, with the German's Sauber third fastest, 0.619secs off the Australian's time. Aston Martin's the Spanish driver was fourth fastest, with the Sauber of Bortoleto ahead of the Mercedes of Russell and the Alpine of Pierre Gasly and Williams' Carlos Sainz.
